Guidebook for Women Postdoc Advancement

The “Advancing Postdoc Women Guidebook” offers career advice and resources for early career women scientists

By Fred Krebs

Published in 2015 by the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA), the “Advancing Postdoc Women Guidebook” provides valuable information for early career women scientists. As stated on the back cover of the Guidebook, this publication has its roots in a survey of “46 professional associations’ and societies’ information about the programs and resources offered to postdoc women or women in general to enhance their advancement into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and social, behavioral, and economic sciences (SBE) disciplines.” In addition to the survey results, the Guidebook offers five, information-rich chapters titled:

  1. Utilizing Professional Societies and Associations
  2. Beyond “Finding Good Mentors” to “Building and Cultivating Your Mentoring Team”
  3. Making the Most of Your Postdoc: Career Preparation and Planning
  4. Beyond Graduate School
  5. Work-Life and Childcare Resources for Postdoc Women

The Guidebook also includes an appendix that lists professional societies and associations available to researchers in various fields.

The Guidebook is offered first as a pdf, although limited hard copies can be obtained from the NPA. For more information, visit the Guidebook page on the NPA website.
